During the lesson: Basic Drawing Techniques

My Reflection:

It is my first time trying drawing the basic sketching techniques. To be honest, I am not really satisfied with my practice and I am confident that I could do better in the future.

Homework: Sketch of Fruit

My Reflection :

I think that I need to improve how to draw the right size and shape of the apple, as I discover that the sketching is quite different from the real apple.

THE STORY OF STARRY NIGHT

Vincent van Gogh painted "Starry Night "in 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh lived well in the hospital and was allowed more freedom than any other patient. If attended, he could leave the hospital grounds. He was allowed to paint, read, and withdraw into his own room, even given a studio. While he suffered from the occasional relapse into paranoia and fits, or officially, he had been diagnosed with epileptic fits, it seemed his mental health was recovering. Unfortunately, he relapsed. He began to suffer hallucinations and have thoughts of suicide as he plunged into depression. Accordingly, there was a tonal shift in his work. He returned to incorporating darker colours from the beginning of his career and Starry Night is a beautiful example of that shift. Blue dominates the painting, blending hills into the sky. The little village lies at the base of the picture in browns, greys, and blues. Even though each building is clearly outlined in black, the yellow and white of the stars and the moon stand out against the sky, drawing the eyes to the sky. They are the big attention grabber of the painting.

VINCENT VAN GOGH BIOGRAPHY/BACKGROUND

Vincent van Gogh, one of the most well-known post-impressionist artists, for whom colour was the chief symbol of expression, was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits characterized by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful and, struggling with severe depression and poverty, committed suicide at the age of 37.

My Reflection:

The reason for choosing this painting is because I appreciate his painting style and the colours used, which let me feel very mysterious and give me a weird attraction. It makes me very curious about what did Van Gogh thinking when he was drawing this image. After observing this painting, I discovered that Van Gogh used a unique way to express the light from stars.
